Introduction

For the last few years I've become involved with Oolite, a space-trading game in the spirit of Elite.

I first got hooked on Elite on my Commodore 64, spending an inordinate amount of time plodding between planets on my quest to become the richest and most feared space trader of all times. Ny enthusiasm lessened once I got an Amiga, as the game inexplicably became less immersive with the newer graphics and the changes to the gameplay. Sometimes less is more..

Eventually I discovered Oolite, which brought back a similar level of enthusiasm as on the C64, especially once I discovered OXPs and the thriving community of modders who have created most of the things in-game which were only hinted at in the original game novella such as the Generation Ships or Deep Space Dredgers.

After playing for a bit I started hacking the code to fix some bugs or change some behaviour or other to better suit it to my own liking. Next thing I knew I was invited onto the development team, where I've been a casual contributor ever since, hopefully breaking less than I fix.

Oolite Expansion Packs

Here are some OXPs which I have assisted with, bug-fixed, or am hosting for one reason or another.

  • Shaderified Sung's Textures (Replacement Set) [V1.3] [Wiki]
  • Shaderified Sung's Textures [V1.3] [Wiki]
These were originally created by Sung, then shaderified by ADCK. I've made some small tweaks and bug-fixes to bring this OXP up to speed for Oolite 1.76.
Please read the readme for changes, full credits, and license terms.

Oolite Patches

Here are some source-code patches to Oolite which will change the game-play beyond what is possible with OXPs. These are code-changes which are not part of the core game for whatever reason - either they are still being worked on, or have not found favour with the majority of players/coders.

I find quilt to be a nice tool for managing multiple patches.

Patches for V1.76

  • AutoEject: as the name says, auto-ejects the player if his ship is fitted with an Escape Capsule.
  • Blockers: Makes Asteroids stop the Torus drive as per Elite; also increases the distance from a station at which a witchjump can be initiated.
